Why Revenge Movies Feel So Personal to Us?

I started noticing something strange lately…Why Revenge Movies Are Becoming Blockbusters?
Almost every time a dark action movie becomes a big hit, the hero seems to be carrying some kind of pain.

Wounded.
Broken.
Humiliated.
Betrayed.

Someone has taken something from him. Someone has hurt his family. Someone has destroyed his life. Someone has made him feel powerless.
And then…
He fights back.
We have seen this in different forms across Indian cinema – Animal, Maharaja, Marco, Pushpa: The Rise, Theri, Jailer, Asuran, Ghajini, Kaabil, Mom, Lucifer, Dhurandhar and many others.
They are not all exactly the same kind of revenge story. But there is something common in many of them.

Pain.
Loss.
Betrayal.
Humiliation.
Injustice.
Powerlessness.

And then… the fight back.
And that made me wonder…

Why do these stories connect with us so strongly?

Is it because people today are carrying more hurt than before? Or is it because somewhere in real life, many of us have been wronged by someone?

A friend.
A life partner.
Someone at workplace
Someone at neighbourhood
Someone at business
A family member.

Someone we trusted. Someone we thought would stand by us. But real life is different.
We cannot always fight back.
Sometimes we stay silent.
Sometimes we adjust.
Sometimes we simply walk away.
Sometimes we know exactly what we wanted to say…
But we don’t say it. Because there are consequences.

Only people with Power, Authority & Money can win justice in this country.

You cannot punch your boss because he treated you unfairly.
You cannot destroy a person’s life because they betrayed you.
You cannot always confront a family member.
You cannot always get the apology you deserve.

And real life definitely doesn’t give us background music, slow-motion entry or a punch dialogue when we finally decide to fight back. Maybe that’s why these movies hit differently.
When we watch the hero finally stand up… It almost feels like we are standing up too.
When the hero fights back, something inside us responds. When the villain finally gets what is coming…We feel that satisfaction.
Not necessarily because we want violence. Maybe because we want justice.

The Hero Is Fighting Their Battle. But Somehow It Feels Like Ours.

Think about what happens inside a theatre. The hero has been humiliated for two hours. We have watched him lose. We have watched people underestimate him. We have watched him suffer.
And then suddenly…
The music changes.
The hero gets up.
And the entire theatre erupts.
Why?
Is it just the action? I don’t think so. Somewhere, the audience has emotionally travelled with that character.
Their anger has become our anger.
Their pain has become familiar.
And their victory feels strangely personal.
It almost feels like the hero is fighting the battles we never could.

Saying the things we never said. Doing the things we only imagined in our head.
The hero fights.
We feel.
The hero wins.
And somewhere…
we feel a strange sense of satisfaction too.

Maybe It’s Not Revenge We Want

This is where I started looking at these movies differently. Maybe people are not actually celebrating revenge. Maybe they are celebrating the feeling that justice finally happened.
Because there is a difference. Deep down, most people don’t necessarily want to destroy someone who hurt them.

They want the wrong to be recognised.
They want accountability.
They want closure.
They want the person who caused the damage to face consequences.
And most importantly…
They want to believe that wrongdoing doesn’t always win. There is Karma still exists in this world.
That’s a powerful feeling.
Especially when real life doesn’t always give us that ending.

Why Does Helplessness Matter in Revenge?

When we feel powerless in real life, a movie gives us a temporary world where the powerless person suddenly becomes powerful. The person who was ignored gets heard. The person who was humiliated gets his moment. The person who lost everything gets another chance.
And the person who thought he could get away with everything…

Doesn’t. That fantasy can be extremely satisfying. And I don’t think we should immediately interpret that satisfaction as people becoming violent.

Even recent Indian cinema shows how broad this trend is. Animal crossed roughly ₹890 crore worldwide, while Maharaja crossed ₹100 crore worldwide within its third weekend. Marco crossed ₹100 crore worldwide in just 15 days, and Pushpa: The Rise crossed ₹300 crore worldwide and was described by The Indian Express as a blockbuster of 2021.

And these aren’t all the same movie. That is what makes the pattern interesting.

But Are We Really Craving Revenge?

Maybe. Maybe sometimes we are. But I think there is another emotion sitting underneath it.
Justice.
Think about Ghajini. Sanjay is not fighting Lakshman simply because he wants to look powerful. He is trying to avenge Kalpana’s murder.

Think about Mom. Devki turns to revenge after the perpetrators who attacked her daughter walk free because the legal case fails.

Think about Kaabil. Rohan’s revenge comes after his wife is assaulted and the system fails to give them the justice they were looking for.

Different stories.
Different languages.
Different heroes.
But the emotional starting point is often similar. Something happened that should not have happened. And the hero refuses to simply accept it.

And Then There Are Movies Like Pushpa

This is where things become even more interesting. Pushpa: The Rise isn’t a simple “someone hurt me, so I’ll take revenge” story. Pushpa’s journey is also about poverty, identity, humiliation, status and the constant struggle to prove his worth. His confrontation with Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat grows out of humiliation and a power struggle, with Shekhawat eventually vowing revenge.
So maybe the audience isn’t only responding to revenge. Maybe we’re responding to something bigger. The desire to not remain powerless. And that feeling can come from many places.

Work.
Relationships.
Family.
Money.
Social status.
Failure.
Humiliation.
Being underestimated.
Being treated unfairly.

Maybe that’s why the revenge hero feels so familiar. Because almost everyone knows what it feels like to be powerless at some point.

So… Is Humanity Disappearing?

I don’t think so.
At least, I don’t think the success of these movies alone proves that. In fact, maybe it tells us something completely different. People still care about right and wrong. People want Karma to work.
They still care about fairness. They still want consequences. They still want the person who caused the pain to be held accountable.

Maybe revenge movies are not becoming hits because people enjoy violence.
Maybe they are becoming hits because people enjoy watching helplessness disappear.
And that makes me wonder…Are revenge movies becoming blockbusters because people enjoy revenge?Or because real life gives us so few chances to actually fight back?

Maybe the real blockbuster isn’t revenge itself.
Maybe it’s the fantasy of justice in a world where too many people sometimes feel powerless.
And suddenly with all this thinking,
The rise of blockbuster revenge movies started making a little more sense to me.

Sometimes the ending feels more satisfying than the revenge itself.
There is something satisfying about watching a character who spent most of the story being broken, ignored or powerless finally stand up again. Maybe somewhere inside, we all want to believe that our own unfinished stories can also have a better ending.
