A joke is not a joke, if you have to keep laughing at it for years

Double Crown or Rendu Suzhi – Just a Joke?

A joke about two whorls was repeated for years. She laughed along, never knowing that one day, the joke would become her reality.

It’s about a newly married couple. Everything was new for them, new home, new family, new relationships, new life. And sometime during the first year of marriage, she came to know her husband had two whorls on his head. Till that day she had never heard anything about it in her life. In Tamil, it’s commonly called rendu suzhi.

Two Whorls, Two Weddings

Having two hair whorls is actually a natural genetic trait. It is influenced by genetics and by how hair follicles develop, and it’s relatively uncommon too, with some sources putting it at around 5% of the global population. Scientifically, there’s no evidence it affects personality, intelligence, marriage, or future. Some say they are very special.

But then came the family belief.

“Two suzhi means two marriages.”

Double Crown or Two Suzhi is related to Double marriage?

And that’s where her story begins.

Her brother-in-law would casually say it to her, “Anni, do you know anna has two whorls?” And then would come the next line, “You are so paavam, anni.”

She didn’t even understand what was happening at first. Why was she paavam? Then she heard the belief, two whorls means two marriages. Her mother-in-law would join in and everyone would laugh.

She used to wonder, why talking about it all the time? But she laughed along.

This was around during 2010-2015. Not like today, when relationships, marriage, even conversations around separation are looked at very differently.

So when she kept hearing the same joke about her husband’s two suzhi, she didn’t think too much about it. Maybe because it was family. Maybe because everyone was saying it as a joke. Maybe because she genuinely didn’t think there was anything behind it.

At some point, even her mother-in-law would say, “Hey, why are you teasing her da?” And her father-in-law would say, “Why are you making her cry?”

But when she brought it up with her husband, the answer was always simple.

“It’s just a joke.”

So she left it there. Just a joke.

But what does rendu suzhi actually mean?

From a scientific point of view, a double hair whorl is simply a natural hair pattern. It is influenced by genetics and by how hair follicles develop. It does not scientifically mean two marriages, and it does not determine personality.

There are different cultural beliefs around double whorls, and the two-marriage belief is one of them. But a belief is not the same as scientific evidence.

A rendu suzhi is just a rendu suzhi.

She didn’t know, back then

She didn’t think much about any of it at the time, she told me. She heard the jokes. She laughed. She moved on. She didn’t know whether the belief was true or false, and honestly, she didn’t even care. Because why would she? She was married. She was building her life. And the people around her kept telling her it was just a joke.

Until one day, the marriage ended.

And suddenly, all those old conversations came back to her. The two suzhi. The second marriage jokes. The “paavam anni” comments. Everything.

And that’s when the joke started looking very different to her. The incidents that happened and the joke was not at all looked like coincidence.

But honestly, one thing always makes to wonder. Why would someone keep telling a newly married bride that her husband has two hair whorls and that it means two marriages, when she didn’t even know about it in the first place?
She had never noticed it. She had never asked about it. Yet the same thing kept coming up.

Not because the two whorls caused anything. They didn’t. There’s absolutely no scientific basis to connect a hair whorl with the end of a marriage. But the irony? That’s difficult to ignore.

They kept saying it as a joke. She kept laughing because she thought it was only a joke.

She never knew the joke would be made true.

Key Takeaways – Two Whorls

  1. Know what people are repeatedly telling you. Don’t underestimate it.
  2. Don’t treat every uncomfortable comment as harmless just because it is said as a joke.
  3. Here’s what I’d tell my younger self – Gone are the days of real love and genuine friendships. Not every relationship needs suspicion, but some comments are worth paying attention to
  4. At the same time, don’t turn superstition into fact. A hair whorl is a hair whorl. It doesn’t decide someone’s future.
  5. The way people talk around you can sometimes tell you more than the superstition itself.
  6. Sometimes a joke is not just a joke. But sometimes, years later, you look back at it very differently. Maybe every incidents finally starts making sense.
